Beach Beatitudes

Beach season is upon us! Perhaps your family plans to head off for your annual “chill-out” or should I say, “burn-out” since the hot winds of the seaside are hardly conducive to chilling. Although I do believe burn-out is what we are each trying to escape or avoid or come out of (whichever may be the case in any given year). Even when funds are low, Chuck insists that we need this week of refreshment. Who am I to argue? So days ahead, we begin pulling out buried goggles, boogie boards, beach towels, and swimsuits.

Every year, my dear husband reminds me to purchase 50+ sunscreen even though he wears a long-sleeve shirt and a baseball cap with a large bandana attached to the back into the ocean. He looks more like he's part of a caravan traveling by camel-back through the hot, dry desert than merely jumping into the waves for some afternoon fun. Generally speaking, when my beach beauty daughters see him sauntering down the sand toward the ocean in his more than unusual garb, they look the other way or bury their heads in a magazine. I simply smile and say, "Isn't he cute? Gotta love him!" They sigh and apply more sun lotion to their already brown, baked bodies. Perhaps someday we girls will see the wisdom of the man in our lives with his hanky laden cap bobbing up and down in the water. At least we know how to locate him.

Indeed, for our family, the "beach week" is a time to kick back, be free, and experience individual and family delights, whether it's reading a good book, playing a round of golf, shopping at Bare Foot Landing, or playing Marco Polo in the pool. It is a time to refresh, relax, reflect, and regroup. But with the freedom comes a sense of foreboding that Satan is lurking behind some dark corner ready to snatch us by the throat and draw us in to some hidden temptation.

That is exactly why each year we covenant together to request the honor of Jesus' presence at our vacation. Not that He isn't there with us already through the Spirit that lives within; He most definitely is there, but we find it helpful to verbally ask Him to make us AWARE of His presence. It is far too easy to give in to subtle and not-so-subtle pressures to conform to society's agenda when sunbathing on the beach or viewing billboards along the road. When we ask Jesus to take us by the hand while strolling down the beach, we are far more apt to guard our hearts and heads and thwart those temptations that walk past.

Here are some helpful ways to include Jesus on your vacation.

BEACH BEATITUDES

*B eware of Satan's tactics. Don't let your guard down just because it's time to relax. Remember Satan never goes on vacation.

*E at in moderation. Resist the urge to woof down every delicacy in sight. It only brings regret later as you try to work off accumulated pounds.

*A sk Jesus to shield your eyes, protect your thoughts, guard your heart, and guide your steps. The Psalmist, a man speaking from experience, once said, "I will set no worthless thing before my eyes"(Psalm 101:3). Wise advice.

*C ommit your way unto the Lord. Ask Him to open doors of witness for you. Pass out tracts at each gas station. Leave one with a tip at restaurants. Listen to people in the elevators to discover spiritual hunger. If you ask for an open door, God will provide one. Watch for the door.

*H elp people in need along the way as God prompts you to do so. Be polite and courteous to others in the parking lot. Take turns at the pool shower. Little deeds of kindness can lead to a greater witness. Remember, we never take a vacation from the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

This vacation, whether you're headed to the beach, the mountains, or around the corner for a cool soda, invite Jesus to come along. You'll have the time of your life!

Sunrise Over Maui

"They who dwell in the ends of the earth stand in awe of Your signs;
You make the dawn and the sunset shout for joy."
 -Psalm 65:8

I grab my cup of steaming mocha latte and quietly slide open the glass door to the patio, not wanting to awaken Chuck who is in a deep sleep. It is 5:30 a.m. and I can't sleep. I want to squeeze out every single drop of our last day in Maui. So I rise to catch the sunrise.
A gentle breeze pushes back my bangs as I rest my arms on the deck railing. The stars wink at me from their pockets in the dark sky. "You'll be back someday," they reassure. The full moon hovers above, with wisps of pale white clouds occasionally gliding by and hiding its face. Palm fronds silhouette the sky and sway in the breeze. The stillness is interrupted only by an occasional passing car.
What words can I say to express what You have so eloquently expressed without words, O Lord?
I climb down the back stairwell and exit the complex for a morning stroll. The air smells like rain. It is now 6:00 a.m. and I can make out the outline of the mountain as I turn the corner to walk down the sidewalk. The sky is a deep sapphire, but slowly lightens to indigo, making the clouds appear darker. Approaching the banyan tree, I hear a full chorus of birds giving a morning concert against the backdrop of the full moon. The sky is lighter now, with the clouds over the mountain a pale grey.
I sit on the rock ledge and soak it all in. The sky is a pale blue now with subtle wisps of pink. I see lights flick on in houses that pepper the landscape at the base of the mountain. The clouds overhead break apart, forming a circle of pinks and blues, offering hope in a new morn.
It's easy to worship what we can see, rather than what we cannot see. I am reminded that the heavens and earth will one day pass away, but God's Word will remain forever! The natural elements were made by Him for our enjoyment. They were never intended to replace Him, merely to direct us to Him. And so, on this lovely and melancholy day, I worship Him. I leave all this beauty, but I do not leave HIM. Real beauty is dwelling where He is, meditating on Him and looking into His face. Now, that's tranquility, whether I am in Maui enjoying a sunrise or in Virginia watching a snowfall.
Beauty is everywhere in some form, but to know the Lord is to know beauty, no matter how ugly or trying the circumstances. And just as sure as the sun rises in the East and sets in the West, God's love will be there for me.

Moving Past the After-Christmas Blues

Last night at church a young mother pulled me aside before the children’s Christmas program. “I remember what you shared with our women’s group a few months ago—about how you experience the blues after Christmas is over. I can relate. I’m dreading it.” Her soft blue eyes filled with unwarranted apology.

My heart ached for the woman. I assured her she wasn’t alone. Many experience the same foreboding feelings when January rolls around.

Here are some tips I shared with her that I’ve found helpful. Perhaps they will encourage you as well.

Plan ahead.

Just as you prepare for the holiday season, plan for the post-holiday season. Often we’ve invested so much energy shopping, decorating, baking, and visiting family that once the holidays are over, we drop into a chair exhausted, totally spent, and without a clue how to move forward into the new year.
Treat yourself to some much-needed rest. Sleep in on the weekends. Take a “4R Rejuvenation.” This is exactly what I have planned for our Life Group ladies on January 26. We will meet together to reflect on our lives, rehearse God’s faithfulness, renew ourselves in His love, and release everything and everyone into His hands. We’ll eat together and treat ourselves to massage therapy.

Having something fun to look forward to, preferably with others, will breathe new life into your spirit.

Invest Time in a New Hobby.

This one thing has greatly helped me over the past two years. Two or three months before the New Year begins, I decide on an outlet I want to pursue that is fresh and new. One year, Chuck and I took a six-week Shag dance class, which got me through to the end of February. I knew the previous October that I’d have this new outlet to liven up the winter months. Another year, I invested more time in my artwork, a hobby I don’t typically spend a lot of time doing.

Take a Winter Trip.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get away. A “trip” may simply mean taking a short drive to a nearby museum or concert. Or it may mean a weekend away at a Bed & Breakfast (one of our favorite getaways). Whatever the trip, plan it in the fall, so that you have something to look forward to in the winter months.

Take your Vitamin D.

This one is getting more press these days, but it was not always so. The winter blahs can sometimes be traced to a lack of sunshine, so make sure you take a good quality Vitamin D supplement to chase away fatigue and depression.  When winter sunshine shows up on your doorstep, take advantage of it. I eat lunch with the front door open, since the sun streams through the glass door.

Keep Moving.

After consuming all those rich holiday foods, our bodies tend to be lethargic. Couple that with cold weather and we often resist the admonition to exercise. It’s so vital to the body and the mind to keep moving. Take a walk. Sign up for an aerobics or swim class. Use the rebounder while watching your favorite television show. Set some nutritional goals or revive old ones.

Get Involved in a Volunteer Activity.

Joy is never experienced so thoroughly as when we give ourselves away to meet the needs of another. Consider volunteering at your local Rescue Mission, food pantry, Battered Women’s Shelter, teen center, or Crisis Pregnancy Center.

Get Together with Friends.

It’s easy to pull within ourselves after a busy Christmas season. Resist the urge to do so. We need each other! Go out for coffee. Invite a friend over. Knit or talk or bake, or whatever it is you love to do, with someone else.

Stay Close to the Lord.

Sometimes during the busyness of the holiday season, we let our devotional lives slip. We talk about the Lord; we do things for the Lord, but we fail to spend quiet time in His presence. Thus we enter the New Year spiritually depleted, longing for love and fulfillment. If we’re not careful, we’ll allow Satan, the flesh, and the world to complete our desires rather than turning to Jesus. Monitor your temptations according to 1 John 2:16 (the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life). Remember that God wants to provide the way of escape if you will draw close to Him (1 Cor. 10:13). Surround yourself with the Body of Christ—don’t isolate.

According to Philippians 4:9, often we simply have to do the right things before we feel like doing them. God will honor our godly actions with good feelings of joy and peace.

Wonderful Day with the Lakeside Baptist Women!

What a treat to speak on "putting the past in the past" at the LBC Women's Event today! And have my friend and neighbor, Linda Sable, come with me!

Theme: Gone with the Wind

From the majestic theme music to actual Gone with the Wind clip to Carol Burnett comedy sketch of "Scarlet in her curtain"--rod and all! To our own Heather Morris browsing tables dressed in her version of Scarlett (with rod and all!), to the glorious three-D hand-painted backdrop by Chrystal Creswell and the beautiful pillars. Not to mention the delicious brunch with men serving. And the gorgeous unique table decor from vintage to modern illustrating the theme.

Awesome job LBC ladies' event team: Sharron Hearne, Aliene Hodges, Tammy Brammer, and Mary Lynn Barrett. A special thanks to Susan Stephens for her moving monologue as the "woman at the well."

Great reminder that the Lord can help us put the past to rest and move on to what He has for us today.

Also wonderful to get some books into hands today. A portion of proceeds goes to support Straight Street of the Roanoke Valley, an inner city ministry that reaches out to lost and hurting teens and their families with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
